LITERARY ELEMENTS

Literary Elements have an inherent existence in literary piece and are extensively employed by writers to develop a literary piece e.g. plot, setting, narrative structure, characters, mood, theme, moral etc. Writers simply cannot create his desired work without

   Flashback

Flashback is a literary device wherein the author depicts the occurrence of specific events to the reader, which have taken place before the present time the narration is following, or events that have happened before the events that are currently unfolding in the story.

A flashback is used in Graduation Day when Cia reflects back on one of the last moments she shared with her brother, Zeen, in their home of Five Lakes Colony. Cia remembers some special advice her brother shared with her, his words being, "Things don't always work out the way we hope. You just have to pick yourself up and find a new direction to go in." (Charbonneau, Page 284) This flashback is important because it lets Cia remember that even though her time in Tosu City did not turn out how she hoped, she needs to find a new path and continue battling.

                  Suspense

Suspense is the intense feeling that an audience goes through while waiting for the outcome of certain events. Without suspense, a reader would lose interest quickly in any story because there is nothing that is making the reader ask, “What’s going to happen next?”

Suspense is used in Graduation Day when Symon tries to shoot Cia. The reader is led on to believe that Cia will be shot, since that is what she is thinking as well, but then, "Gunfire fills the room. A scream rips from my throat, but the bullet never finds me because Zeen gets there first." (Charbonneau, Page 274) The suspense at this moment is important to the story because the reader is led on to believe that the protagonist of the story, Cia, is about to meet a tragic end, even after all she has overcome to get this far. But then it is revealed that it was not Cia who gets shot, but unfortunately her brother Zeen, who she had just been reunited with moments ago.
